On October 11, 2014, Donald L. Morrill Math and Science Elementary and the surrounding community celebrated a day of planting and a ribbon cutting at their new outdoor schoolyard.  The space incorporates sustainable  stormwater management while providing gardening spaces for students as well as active recreation spaces.   Components include fitness equipment, basketball, hopscotch, artificial turf multi use sports field and track. NIU’s Intramural Recreation Facility Celebrates its Grand Opening

Northern Illinois University opened its new intramural facility on September 19, 2014, with a huge party to celebrate. Students were treated with activities across the new multi-use artificial fields as well as the natural grass fields. Kickball games were set up on the softball diamonds at the north end of the19 acre facility. A game of whiffle ball, work out circuits, and soccer drills were actively moving on the artificial turf fields. Jackie Robinson Park Grand Opening

One of Upland Design’s latest projects with the Chicago Park District, Jackie Robinson Park, celebrated its grand opening on July 19, 2014. The ceremony was well attended by families from the surrounding Washington Heights neighborhood. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Alderman Carrie Austin joined the ribbon cutting ceremony while the Chicago Park District staff led the presentation to the community. ADA Compliance for Concrete Workshop

Upland Design Staff recently attended the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) sponsored ADA Compliance for Concrete Workshop. It was sponsored by District One IDOT to help designers and contractors become familiar with changes to the ADA standards and requirements for compliant sidewalks and ramps.  In addition to discussing standards and design options the team learned about the tolerances needed for ADA compliance.   The main focus of the meeting was to review the Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) and their adaptation to the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG). Buffalo Grove Park District Recognizes Olympic Medalist

At a recent Workshop and Board Meeting, the Buffalo Grove Park District recognized Megan Bozek for winning the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team.  Bozek, a Buffalo Grove native, credited the Park District with providing places for her to Go Outside while she enjoyed and developed her love of hockey. Michelle Kelly, while presenting concepts for the master plan for Green Lake Park, met Megan and was inspired by her story. Congratulations to St. Charles Park District for receiving an award for the improvements at River View Courtyard in Pottawatomie Park. The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce presented them with several honors at the Annual Charlemagne Awards Dinner earlier this year. These awards were presented to the community for civic and humanitarian efforts as well as community improvements. Chicago Fire owner, Andrew Hauptman, is expanding the future of recreational soccer leagues in the City of Chicago. Along with multiple indoor/outdoor artificial turf fields, the complex will offer a training center and restaurant. Its pedestrian walkway will have views to the adjacent Chicago River. This new soccer complex will embrace Chicago’s spectrum of weather. The air dome will provide indoor fields for an active space in the snowy winter months like those we’re in now.
