Looking for new ideas for your park, school, campus, or forest preserve? Want to draw more people to the great spaces in your community? Playgrounds, pavilions and sports courts are common amenities and a great draw for people, but providing fresh new spaces that provide activities for adults and kids will keep people coming back as well as keep the wider community interested. Two new trends that are challenging kids and adults are Parkour and Obstacle Courses.
Parkour– A sport that is gaining popularity in the United States is about moving from point A to point B using the obstacles in your way to move across a space. It has been featured in movies for 10 years or more, think 007 in Casino Royale. Now clubs and training groups are teaching kids and adults this unique way of moving and creative thinking. Courses have been developed to help train new members. Whether a seasoned professional, brand new or just an interested citizen these areas are playful and creative spaces for the young and old to explore. Chicago has a club that is spreading the word and manufacturers are coming out with colorful, fun equipment for training. Watch this video to check how some people are using it.
Obstacle Courses – These courses are similar to grouping fitness equipment together, but the equipment is designed and placed to perform together to create a competitive challenge course for users. The fitness loops can create friendly competition and be geared towards adults or youth. Gametime has recently released their new Challenge Course equipment that can be purchased in small, medium or large packages and can include electric timers with photo areas to help users track, attain, and celebrate their goals. These courses are also powerful additions to school recreation areas as they can be programmed as part of the physical education curriculum.
