Crystal Lake Public Library brought in Upland Design to create an exterior accessible route from the downstairs library areas to the existing right of way sidewalk. Along with this practical project, the library wanted to renovate the exterior courtyard space with new landscape plantings. Additionally the interior of the building provides many viewing areas out to the courtyard but staff and patrons felt that it lacked interest.
With direction from staff and Board, Upland Design created a plan that provides both an ADA accessible route and a great new landscape. The plan uses landscape bed lines that are interesting and playful to the eye and uses many native plants that attract butterflies and requires no irrigation systems. The plan resolves ADA accessibility and drainage issues as well as re-uses many existing plants, improves connectivity and reduces maintenance efforts.
