Union Pier

Chikaming Township, New Buffalo Township, and Berrien County partnered to reimagine the intersection of Red Arrow Highway and Union Pier Road as a welcoming gateway and gathering spot for the community. With strong public support from the very first meeting, the project set out to create a more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly area along with a visually cohesive destination. 

As the landscape architect consultant for the team led by The Antero Group, Upland Design provided public engagement and streetscape design services. The role centered on shaping the pedestrian realm with thoughtful site planning, paving, furniture standards, landscaping, and lighting that celebrate Union Pier's coastal character while supporting safe and functional circulation.  

The design process began with a thorough site analysis and base mapping, followed by the development of multiple aesthetic and furniture concepts. These boards provided options for paving materials, planting palettes, lighting, and furnishings. The options where shared with stakeholders and the public for review. Community surveys and open house meetings helped refine the vision in a unified direction. Public input guided the designs until just the right mix was found. 

Upland Design worked closely with Antero Group to finalize a Streetscape Master Plan that balanced vehicular needs with vibrant pedestrian areas. Color renderings, furniture, and lighting standards, and proposed paving patterns established a clear framework for implementation. 

Key Improvements include: 

• Defined pedestrian areas with safe, separated walkways. 
• Introduction of specialty paving and site furniture that reflect Union Pier's character. 
• Landscape and planter design to soften the corridor and create seasonal interest. 
• Clear wayfinding and visual cues to enhance the community identity. 
• Connections to the Red Arrow Highway multiuse path 

The resulting comprehensive plan provides the community with a detailed roadmap for implementation. Design standards, specifications, and community-backed concepts balance beauty, function, and context-sensitive design. The Union Pier Improvements were installed and have strengthened the area's identity and fostered a safer, more enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike. The corner was once a drive by area and has turned into a destination where commerce and fun meet.
