Richland Elementary Outdoor Classroom
Richland Elementary Outdoor Classroom
Richland School transformed its interior courtyard into a dynamic, nature-based outdoor classroom, creating a peaceful yet engaging environment that extends learning beyond the walls of the elementary school. Upland Design partnered closely with school staff and key stakeholders to develop and implement a comprehensive master plan that supported both long-term visioning and successful fundraising.
Through an interactive, collaborative process, Upland Design explored program needs, student experiences, and design ideas to shape a flexible space that supports learning, exploration, and connection to nature. The completed courtyard balances quiet reflection with active engagement, ensuring the space serves a wide range of educational and social needs.
The improvements included a welcoming entry garden with a reading nook, multiple outdoor classroom areas, hands-on working gardens, and a larger amphitheater-style space for group learning and gatherings. Sustainable and educational elements—such as a rain garden with native plantings and a butterfly garden—reinforced environmental stewardship while creating immersive learning opportunities.
The master plan also included a detailed cost estimate that guided fundraising, phasing, and prioritization. Together, the completed improvements delivered a lasting outdoor learning environment that enriches the student experience, supports curriculum goals, and strengthens community pride.
