St. Francis
Sustainable Parking Lot & Entry Signage

Sustainable Parking Lot and Entry Signage

Located near downtown Joliet, the University of St. Francis continues to grow as a welcoming campus. Upland Design was engaged to reimagine the primary vehicular entrance serving the Motherhouse and Welcome Center—an arrival experience that needed to balance functionality, sustainability, and a strong sense of place.

Working closely with university staff, Upland Design developed an economical and efficient solution for the site’s unique geometry, accommodating expanded parking needs while creating a clear, intuitive drop-off for visitors. Sustainability and Green Infrastructure was a key driver of the design, with permeable pavers, energy-efficient LED lighting, and onsite stormwater detention seamlessly integrated into the project—allowing the University to lead by example while meeting operational goals.

The redesign enhances both performance and first impressions. A new gateway sign establishes a strong campus identity and reflects the historic, local stone architecture of the Motherhouse, while thoughtfully designed planting at the entry, signage, and parking perimeter creates a welcoming, cohesive landscape. Low-maintenance materials ensure long-term durability, reinforcing the University’s commitment to stewardship, accessibility, and an inviting campus environment for students, staff, and visitors alike.
